William Betts had a career in tech industries where he established proficiency in computer language and programing. From this, he uses complex industrial processes to create paintings that reflect the possibilities for an analog medium in a digital age. Betts uses his own source material (photographs/videos) as data sets to be examined, sampled, re-contextualized, manipulated and represented. Typically less interested in content and more concerned with the structural and social aspects of the image.

Interferences 2022

Within the new series, I continue my deliberation on the topic of perception and the realm of opportunities that can be created. The term “Interferences” describes my new works of which consist of a photographic composition and multiple panels comprised of casting resin featuring manually embossed imprints that are mounted in front of it.

Superimposition, permeation and oscillation of different layers lead to visual interferences and prismatic effects. The space that is located between the observer and the actual image serves as a medium that itself becomes part of the image and is modeled and sculpted. Through interferences, my new works manifest the notion of sight as a form of exploring the relation between what can and cannot be seen.

Landscape: Remixed 2014

German based photography artist, Kuettinger’s debut photographic series Landscape: Remixed is an examination of perception, horizons and a density of space and time, assembled to present stories of landscapes. Single photographic images are stretched, shifted and compressed into one picture frame to create the simultaneous image of a scene.

The artist’s intent is to have each single shot of a different point of view be given a new context within the structure of the image – creating, not deceptions, but possibilities of the landscapes they are based on. Concentrating on images of land as a result of human interactions, the concept and terms of Landscapes: Remixed is similar to a song remix by a DJ. The remix is a visual re editing of the rhythm and shape of the motif, as well as the changing of the time tracking the main aspect of a designed landscape to be elaborated as the concept or idea of the structure of the image. This “customized” construction is created analogously to the selective perception of the observer, thus impressing a memory of the landscape as voyage. The resulting impression is neither from a dream perspective nor a viewpoint one can understand and accept as real. Küttinger’s art form then, becomes abstracted panoramas of dynamism and contemplation.

Kuettinger studied architecture with a main focus on conceptual urbanism at the Technical University of Munich. He received his degree as an architect in 1999. Georg has been working as a self-taught photography artist since then. His fascination for photography started when he won his first camera at the age of 9 – in a drawing competition on the subject of woods and snakes. A highlight of his career was being selected from artists across Western Europe to have his work featured in a solo booth as a ‘promising emerging artist’ at KIAF art fair Seoul 2008.

Küttinger has shown in a wealth of solo and group exhibitions, as well as being represented at art fairs in Europe, Asia and Canada. The Kostuik Gallery has been representing Georg since 2015.

David Burdeny

David Burdeny

David Burdeny

Vancouver BC-based photography artist, David Burdeny has exhibited with the Jennifer Kostuik Gallery since 2001, showcasing his images from the world over, including Japan, Antarctica, Kenya, Brazil, China, Burma, France, Italy, Canada and the USA. Known for his finely composed photographs, Burdeny has explored a variegated photographic landscape ranging from minimal seascapes, ornate European interiors to abstract aerial images. Be it leaning out from a low flying helicopter, shooting from the deck of an Antarctic bound icebreaker or wading in hip-waders for an ocean tide to advance, Burdeny faithfully imbeds his own formal and minimalist signature into each and every image, further expressing a life long passion for the built environment and the camera’s interpretation of it. Burdeny’s photography takes the viewer on a visual journey through some of the world’s most iconic cities while his vast aerial photographs serve to build bridges of empathy to sensitive landscapes and ecosystems of our world in a way that is both beautiful and thought provoking.

Vancouver, Canada, based David Burdeny has exhibited with the Jennifer Kostuik Gallery since 2001, showcasing his images from the world over, including Antarctica, Iceland, Brazil, China, Burma, Cambodia, France, Italy, Canada and the USA. Known for his finely composed photographs, David Burdeny has spent the past 20 years exploring a variegated photographic Landscape ranging from minimal seascapes, ornate European interiors to abstract aerial images. Widely collected in Canada, the USA, Asia and Europe, the sheer beauty of David’s images has firmly placed him within the realm of Canada’s most sought after photo-based artists. David’s willingness to take risks, eschew dogma and continuously pursue his innate curiosity for new subjects and themes has become a signature element in his work. Be it mounting a camera beneath a self -built drone, shooting from the deck of an Antarctic bound icebreaker or waiting for an ocean tide to advance, David faithfully imbeds his own formal signature into each and every image further expressing a lifelong passion for the built environment and the camera’s interpretation of it. Distinctly David Burdeny, the photographs are rigorous yet graceful, inviting the viewer to form their own narrative as if they too were passing through space or gazing into the horizon for the very first time.

David Burdeny’s Masters in Architecture and Interior Design background combined with his upbringing in the vast Canadian prairies provides the template for his keen technical ability, enduring patience and minimalist aesthetic. Recently moving from using large format film to now the finest available digital cameras and precision optics, his images are rendered large and detailed. A Bright Future- Photographs of Russian Subways, Theaters and Palaces 2015 received an explosion of media interest, especially in the UK and Russia. Burdeny was in New York City to receive his First Place Award from IPA for Avata Metro Station, St. Petersburg, Russia in the Category of Historic Architecture, and was interviewed for the most recent articles for The Guardian UK and Wired publications amongst several others. In 2012, the Ancora Series of 2010 was exhibited at the Centre for Photographic Art, Carmel CA, Curated by Richard Gadd. Burdeny has won several gold awards in international art photography competitions, most significantly receiving International Photographer of the Year in the Nature category for Canada, revealed at the Lucie Awards Ceremony in New York City, October 2008. His first book Shorelines sold out in both the limited collector edition and trade publication. He has 10 Limited Edition Photographic Series currently offered and is represented by other art dealers in Canada, the USA and Europe.
