Damon Hyldreth

Damon Hyldreth’s approach is instinctive, like nature itself. The artist describes his process as discovery through making, becoming like a form of travel for him. He has conversations with his materials as he considers their potential energy and lures them out of their dynamic forces of nature, allowing the material itself to take on a life of its own. He references the shift in art history where art was once created for magical and religious purposes and later for decoration. Hyldreth believes his work stands as a reminder of the connection between humans and nature as the world around us becomes increasingly removed from this essential and most basic union. His goal as an artist is to combine both personal and historical intentions and allows the viewer to engage with the sculptures on a subliminal and uniquely personal level.

His methods include casting and fabrication of metal into form that is at the same time structural, fluid and alive. Hyldreth’s compositions are materially informed and informing. While the materials he uses are clearly man-made, the result of his collaboration wit them is a blurring of the divide between nature and structure, space and form.

Stuart Robertson

Stuart Robertson’s artwork references many historical and renowned artists, architects, inventors and writers including Karl Blossfeldt (1865 – 1932), Emilie Jacques Ruhlmann (1879 – 1933), Johannes Gutenberg (mid-1400s), and Robert Gair (1839 – 1927). All of these figures were integral to the development of their craft, which either originated from their work or was pushed to new boundaries due to their fore thinking.

Of particular interest to Robertson are books, libraries, and the early dissemination of information. Looking closely at his small and intimate, often object-based art, the viewer will notice the inclusion of many historical instruments and tools including individual metal stamps from Gutenberg’s invention, the moveable type, and fragments of long-extinct plants, a nod to the early documentation through photography by Blossfeldft. Robertson’s use of gold and silver leaf mimics the precious nature of his shadow-box collages, best viewed in person and up close.
