Story of this Artwork
The brutalist movement in architecture emerged in the 1950s from the early 20th century modernist movement. Brutalist buildings are known for their massive monolithic blocks and grids, and geometric shapes in concrete. The architect La Corbusier was a leading figure in this movement. inspired by minimalist construction to reveal the workings and material used in its making. The inclusion of silver leaf is a tongue-in-cheek nod to the exclusion of decoration in Brutalism and creates a beautiful reflective quality to the grid-like artworks.
