The Irascibles I
This piece is from a group of 18 works named after the group of American abstract expressionists of which there were 18, The Irascibles. They were given this name by the press after they wrote to the President of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1950. They rejected the museum’s exhibition “American Painting Today”, boycotting the accompanying competition. The group includes artists Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell and Mark Rothko.
