The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but having new eyes.
Jennifer Kostuik brings together new paintings by two of the gallery’s core artists in a duo show inspired by recent travel adventures taken by each artist. Abstraction of light from shadow play, sunsets, sparkling waterscapes and tropical or arid vegetation pours out in these featuring atmospheric and ethereal works.
Vancouver Island based, Steven Goring recently experienced traveling in Savuti, one of the more isolated areas in Botswana, Africa. In researching the name, the artist found that the locals say the meaning is something unpredictable and can’t be explained – mysterious. Inspired by colors and light of the arid conditions, Goring has created 7 new oil paintings for his Savuti Series
Abstraction by Southern Ontario based Master Printer and painter Stu Oxley is based on his referencing sketchbook drawing. They evolved from a sense or memory of a place such as his recent travels to Barbados. Oxley works with pastel, charcoal or color intaglio processes to produce acrylic paintings, chin colle (the use of Japanese rice paper) monoprints and drawings. In his new paintings, fields of colour are punctuated by enigmatic, seemingly spontaneous marks that are not specific to the tropics, but they are certainly the artist’s response to the big sea and sky and also subconscious meandering.
