Andy Eccleshall

For over 40 years, Andy Eccleshall continues to be inspired by drama in nature and contrasts in light and form to create his engaging oil paintings.
Growing up in the UK, the poetic nature of his painting shows how firmly rooted he is in the English tradition of landscape painting, a reverence for nature that emerged in the 18th Century. When viewing an Eccleshall painting, one can recall the Romantic landscape style emulated by William Turner, who created expressionistic studies of light, color, and atmosphere and Thomas Gainsborough who innovated painting out-of-doors directly from nature, known now as plein air painting.

Inspired by his Pacific Northwest home in Washington State, Eccleshall paints plein air studies and takes his own source photographs to use as references. He observes the atmosphere and other details of the subject matter while he is on site. From there, he is able to paint a new illusion of the original scene. Eccleshall’s dramatic cloud forms, utterly still twilight depictions and his use of almost completely monochromatic color palettes portray specific lighting and a poetic mood. A small light glowing in an upper window of an otherwise dark country home, the stars in the sky above an abandoned barn or his cumulus clouds rolling up into the sky are almost as if a visual scene has leapt from the pages of a classic novel.
“I have been engaged with art seemingly my whole life in one form or another. Running throughout my work has been my fascination with, and joy of painting landscape and atmosphere, predominantly in oil. I grew up in the UK where atmosphere (or weather) was always the topic of conversation. Now living in the Pacific Northwest, I find myself surrounded by constant inspiration. Although my paintings comprise intense details, I’m much more interested in the atmosphere and the air as the subject than I am about accurately rendering.”

Biography
Andy Eccleshall lives in Edmonds, WA, USA. Born in the Midland town of Stafford, England, he began his artistic career at the age of 16 specializing in architectural illustration and landscape painting. Stafford is an ancient town nestled in the lowlands of the North Midlands and surrounded by farmland and moorland. Mist covered pastures in the fall, dramatic scenery of the Pennine Hills and a pastoral rolling landscape with features centuries old were constant sources of inspiration for the artist.
After several years as a fine artist and illustrator, he returned to education in 1992 at the Exeter Faculty of Arts and Design in southern England. Inn 1994, he moved to the United States and travelled extensively during the first few years. He was dazzled by the enormous contrasts in the landscapes across the country -- the beauty of the changing seasons against the never ending and ever changing landscape. His European roots combined with his love of the Pacific West Coast landscape, as been his inspiration for his work.
