Every once in a while, things just fall into place, and the making of this image follows that route. The Côte d’Azur had been hot and sunny the days prior to my arrival. For the kind of images I make the conditions were less than ideal. However, to my good fortune, a weather system with beautiful cloud cover had followed me in from northern Italy. From first light I photographed this arrangement of steel poles and soon realized the tops were beautifully rusted. Then the sun rose a bit higher and the horizon began to glow red as did the tops of the poles. It lasted a few minutes before the colour temperature evened out and the glowing steel extinguished itself. I tried for a repeat performance the next day only to find the clouds had left as soon as I had arrived.
